9-year-old boy catches 80-pound sturgeon in Tennessee

Coye Price wanted to catch a bigger fish than his sisters’. Now, the 9-year-old has a fish tale that will be hard to top. 

He reeled in a nearly 80-pound sturgeon on Old Hickory Lake in Tennessee. Price snagged the fish in the area around Spencer Creek in 25 feet of water, according the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. 

The sturgeon weighed in at 79.8 pounds besting his sisters Farrah and Caitlin’s records. Caitlin once caught a 39.8-pound striper and Farrah 58-pound blue catfish.

The lake sturgeon is one of three native sturgeon species found in Tennessee, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. 

Lake sturgeon reportedly grow to eight feet in length, weigh up to 300 pounds, and live 150 years.

Price released his prize catch as the species is endangered in Tennessee.
