New Orleans mayor releases new book, a treatise on race

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu's new book, "In the Shadow of Statues," reads like a memoir. But it also has elements of a political manifesto and a treatise on race in America — including reaction to his leadership in removing four Confederate-era monuments from the city landscape.

The book goes on sale Tuesday and includes the text of a widely praised speech he delivered that made the case that the monuments marked efforts to celebrate white supremacy.

That speech has given rise to speculation that he has national political ambitions but he says in an Associated Press interview that he is not thinking about a presidential run and isn't sure what he will do once he leaves office.
