More Than 15 Arrested During Charlotte Protests

Charlotte protests

For a third consecutive day, people demonstrated in Charlotte on Sunday into Monday morning in response to the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in Minneapolis. Protests went from peaceful to violent later in the evening.

CMPD says more than 15 protesters were arrested during Sunday’s demonstrations in uptown Charlotte. They tweeted that one protester was arrested for hitting an officer in the face with a rock, and three were arrested on illegal weapons charges. This after more than 30 people were arrested during Saturday’s protests.

Sunday night CMPD tweeted, “Violent activity is escalating. Several protesters throwing bottles and rocks. A dispersal order has been issued to protect lives.” Later on in the evening CMPD tweeted that “Protesters continue to escalate violence despite several orders to disperse. Officers have deployed riot control agents to disperse the crowds and protect lives.”

There are reports that some uptown businesses and buildings were damaged during Sunday night’s protests.

Earlier Sunday, the city of Charlotte tweeted that reports that the National Guard is deploying to Charlotte in response to the demonstrations are not true, that the National Guard has been in Charlotte assisting with COVID-19 response, and “there are no plans at this time to deploy the National Guard in response to demonstrations.”
