North Carolina COVID-19 Cases Top 25,000

The number of coronavirus cases in North Carolina is now 25,412 after an increase of 784 additional cases Thursday. The state now has 827 COVID-19 related deaths, an increase of 33 from Wednesday. For a second consecutive day, the number of coronavirus-related hospitalizations reached a new high, and is currently 708.

When it comes to the availability of hospital beds in the state, reporting hospitals have 19,065 hospital beds, and 24% of those are available. There are a total of 3,223 intensive care beds, with 18% available. When it comes to ventilators, North Carolina reporting hospitals have 3,356 and 76% are available.

Just over 11,000 COVID-19 tests were completed Wednesday, above the state’s goal of testing between 5,000 and 7,000 people each day. 8% of tests were positive on Wednesday, similar to the past few days and down from 10% positive on May 22.

Mecklenburg County saw an increase in cases, up 127 to 3,605 between Wednesday and Thursday’s report. There were 5 additional deaths reported, for a total of 85. Mecklenburg County also has 14 of the state’s 86 ongoing outbreaks in nursing homes, and 6 of the 37 residential care outbreaks in the state.

Nationwide, the COVID-19 death toll has now exceeded 100,000 people, and there have been more than 1.7 million cases. New York has the most cases at around 365,000, followed by New Jersey with just over 156,000 and Illinois with over 114,000. North Carolina has the 17th highest number of cases, but the ninth highest population. Alaska has the fewest number of cases at just over 400, followed by Montana, Hawaii and Wyoming.
