CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A three-day weekend kicks off Friday for summer’s last gasp as thousands hit the road.

AAA spokeswoman Molly Hart said it's a personal choice if you're going to travel during a pandemic, but if you are headed out for a holiday destination, it’s best to keep COVID-safety tips in mind.

Keep disinfectant supplies and face-coverings in the car with you, she said, and take food and water with you, so you don’t have to stop as much, potentially exposing yourself to the coronavirus.

"If you are going to be staying in a hotel, make sure you check to see it’s still open, what COVID-19 guidelines that they have, and also bring some of your own cleaning supplies," Hart said.

Hart said AAA’s travel restriction map provides COVID-related travel restrictions, checkpoints, and closures.

And, good news for motorists: gas prices are lower by about 43 cents a gallon this Labor Day weekend than last.

AAA had forecast about 700 million trips would have been taken over the summer, but Hart said the projection was off by about 15 percent and that about 600 million trips will have been taken.
