(Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Cases of COVID-19 around the United States continue to rise rapidly.
Over 3 million cases have now been reported after a new record was set yesterday with over 60,000 additional cases of coronavirus.
With cases increasing in 40 states, new projections show that COVID-19 could kill 200,000 Americans by November.
According to the CDC, over 130,000 people have died in the U.S. as a result of COVID-19.
Worldwide nearly 12 million people have been infected with over 547,000 dead.
Nearly 7 million people have recovered around the globe or about 93 percent of the total number of closed cases.
The U.S. had the most COVID-19 cases and deaths by far.
Texas confirmed over 10,000 new cases in a single day on Tuesday, with Florida reporting over 7,300.
In Pennsylvania, the health department reported over 1,000 cases, the first time that has happened since May. Officials say a backlog in tests is partially the reason for the increase.
Last week, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned that daily coronavirus cases in the U.S. could balloon to over 100,000 a day.
"I am not satisfied with what's going on because we are going in the wrong direction if you look at the curves of the new cases, so we've really got to do something about that and we need to do it quickly," he added. "Clearly we are not in total control right now," Fauci said last week during a hearing with the Senate Health, Education Labor and Pensions Committee.
Fauci added that everyone who comes into contact with other people in public need to wear a mask to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and to avoid large crowds and socially distance themselves from others.
