LOUISVILLE (93.7 The Fan) - Real, breathing, actual fans were in attendance during a sporting event on Sunday.

What only months ago was the norm, has become a rarity — fans cheering, booing reacting to live sports in person.

There were 4,850 people on hand in Louisville Sunday for the inaugural game at Lynn Family Stadium to watch the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC defeat Louisville City FC 3-1.

While it will probably take a week or two to find out if anyone got infected in attendance, KDKA's The Fan Morning Show said other sports leagues should be reaching out to the USL asking what they did.

“This is a really good test case as it turns out I think for other sports, and not just soccer obviously,” said Fan Morning anchor Jim Colony.

Masks were required to be worn by the fans and, according to reports, there were no incidents and only a few people needed to be reminded to put their mask on.

Social distancing was also enforced with not every seat open. Temperatures were also taken as fans entered the stadium

"No arrests, no ejections,” Eric Granger, general manager of ASM Global, the stadium operator told the Louisville Courier Journal. "There were two or three people I had to ask to put their masks on (but) I've worked a lot of openings, and none with COVID-19, and I couldn't be more pleased."

Morning Show host Colin Dunlap says he thinks sports can have fans as long as people are willing self-police and follow the guidelines in place to keep people safe.

If people can be responsible and follow rules while entering and leaving the stadium and while getting concessions, will be see fans in seats sooner than later?

While a majority of the fans in Louisville are season ticket holders and under a third of the stadium’s capacity was used, over 4,800 people got to watch a live sporting event during a pandemic.

The next two weeks will tell us more if it was a good idea, but if it works, why can’t it work elsewhere?
