While the news surrounding Carolina Panthers star running back Christian McCaffrey could be worse, it's still plenty bad as he his out at least a month with an ankle injury, according to multiple reports.

His last play against Tampa Bay came with 13:25 left to play when he scored on a touchdown run to trim the Buccaneers lead to 21-14. He never returned.

Earlier in second quarter, McCaffrey motioned to the sideline to have backup Mike Davis replace him. There's no word yet if the incidents in the fourth quarter and in the second quarter are related.

McCaffrey became just the third player in NFL history last season to have at least 1,000 yards rushing and receiving. He also played 93% of the team's offensive plays last season. He hasn't missed a game in his career.

McCaffrey signed a four-year, $64 million contract extension, making him the league's highest paid running back.

More information on his injury is expected Monday afternoon when head coach Matt Rhule holds a press conference.
