Governor Roy Cooper said Tuesday that a full Republican National Convention would be "very unlikely" in Charlotte due to COVID-19 and public health concerns.
In response, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel released a statement on Twitter.
In the statement, McDaniel said, "We hope to still conduct business of our convention in Charlotte, but we have an obligation to our delegates and nominee to begin visiting the multiple cities and states who have reached out in recent days about hosting an historic event to show that America is open for business."
The RNC convention has been scheduled to be held in Charlotte in late August. The Committee recently sent a letter to Governor Cooper expressing they they expected to be able to hold the full convention, regardless of the coronavirus pandemic in that area.
A full convention is defined as "19,000 delegates, alternate delegates, staff, volunteers, elected officials and guest inside the Spectrum Center." The RNC is also expecting hotels, restaurants, and bars to be at capacity.
