PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Pittsburgh Penguins captain may not be able lead on the ice due to the coronavirus outbreak, but he is still able to lead in the community.

Crosby donated 100,000 meals to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank on Monday.

That equates to 120,000 pounds of food that will be distributed across the Food Bank’s 11-county service area.

“Sidney is such an incredible person both on and off the ice,” said Lisa Scales, President & CEO of the Food Bank. “He’s provided great joy to this region during his tenure with the Penguins, and now he is helping us provide food assistance to those who need it most during the COVID-19 crisis.”

The meals will be distributed across the Food Bank’s 365 pantries, drive-up distribution and home delivery service.

"I saw the people of Pittsburgh coming together to help one another and I wanted to be a part of that," said Sidney Crosby. "The Food Bank and its staff have done an amazing job providing for so many people and I am proud to partner with them during this challenging time."

Over the past seven weeks, the Food Bank has distributed over 4.2 million pounds of food.

Various Penguins players have donated pizzas to local community centers over the past few weeks.
Forward Evgeni Malkin and his wife Anna donated to the Ronald McDonald House of Pittsburgh last week.
