Nearly 21 million Californians have registered to vote in the November election.

The office of California's Secretary of State Alex Padilla said Thursday that figure amounts to 83% of eligible voters in the state, the strongest showing for the state in a general election in 68 years.

New Report of Registration:-20,921,513 Californians were registered to vote as of July 3, 2020.-83.49% of eligible Californians are registered to vote. The highest percentage heading into a General Election in the past 68 years.https://t.co/XEWClA0Dvn#VoteCalifornia

In contrast, less than 73% of eligible voters had registered to vote in the summer of 2016.

The data is from early July, meaning it is likely that the true figure is even higher.

Because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the state is automatically sending a mail-in ballot to every voter who is actively registered, in order to reduce exposure at polling places and make it more convenient for people to vote. The majority of Californians regularly vote by mail.

The deadline to register to vote in California is October 19 and registrations can be submitted by mail or online.
