The local battle over coal-ash continues. In a small school gym near Lake Norman, more than 400 people showed up to demand that Duke Energy dig up the coal ash at a nearby power plant and remove it.

The Department of Environmental Quality did not expect the overwhelming amount of people that packed into the bleachers and on the gym floor. Residents of the area demanded to be heard and shared their concerns for safety for the more than 16 million tons of ash dumped into the nearby unlined pit. Duke Energy maintains that its safe, but residents believe the toxic brew is responsible for an influx of thyroid cancer cases in the area.  Mark Garrison was on the scene bringing you the resident's story from the meeting.
