This is so they. Vince Coakley radio program. Yet it is the Vince Coakley pull Graham but what you hear his voice you know I think Sweden. That's not opinions. I know it's not it's the recovering congressman JD Hayworth and some of the U. Who I've Shearer certain demographic distinctions. I'm being on the planet for a little bit a time. If you're listening on WORD. In the upstate of South Carolina you're going to pay debts that guy what you bank Nguyen who was the sports anchor of channel four. You're right. And if you're in Charlotte you're saying now worried about it. We thought we were rid of this guy and native north you're leading and who went way out to the desert in Arizona. And done we see a cease band and maybe Fox News on occasion. But tonight it to be in our radio widow who were on our radio I guess I should say. Will band yeah the fine folks who are in charge of this programming and my good friend Vince. Oh well me the opportunity to get behind this microphone and visit with you and it is a great homecoming so good. To be back with you now this being Friday I know the temptation. At Friday's. Is swelled. At the start of the weekend for a lot of people here have most folks have a five day work week still will. Even if you're one of those hype pollutants folks who does work via Internet from home office. Fright is still Friday. And it's schooling and do not misunderstand this is not to win guide to the entire educational process but but let's just think back. That would give so much has changed its school. With and a little computers and and all the stuff schools didn't digitized. I don't know. If the film strip still exists. But all I can tell you is in grammar school on Friday. Yeah yeah there would be the spelling test. But almost immediately fall when the spelling test. Ed crank up one blows film strips. And I'm not going to see it wasn't educational but it was that there's something about turning off the lights in the classroom and putting something on a screen bad game. May should they get showtime and it is. And your little more passive or you should be unless you. Were one of those with a discipline problem. In the classroom so in the spirit of Friday. Being spelling test days. I just I I thought we would begin the program in educational fashion. Boys and girls can you say the word. Tristan Deco phobia. Tryst. Dick. Phobia. Bullets won those big high potent words. And to build our word power to do eight. It's especially appropriate that we talk about. Frisco a deck of phobia. It is the fear. Of the number thirteen. And I first encountered this not in Charlotte not in green ball but further down I 85. Oh man. I have a century ago. The brains were moving to Atlanta from Milwaukee my granddad was director of player personnel the front office folks. Had already come self. And it was just fine would mean on pop off. That there are pet names established by yours truly the first born grandkids. So we know Bubba I had moved to Atlanta. And we drive into Atlanta. I have century plus yesterday. April 12. Pick a 1965. Well. You know why I remember that. Because coming down 85. All via the radio stations kinda doing the end the forerunner of talk radio were talking about the fact that they April 12 was the twentieth anniversary. Of FDR's death. So there is sub predictably one of those huge April storms. And how my dad could could navigate that 1962. White blue Ford galaxy. When the rain was coming down in sheets and splatter and against the windshield. Why do they if I didn't know better I thought he might have had. Special instruments like you know instrument flight panels like like you see on an aircraft. But we come through that incredible April storm. And we get into Atlanta and it little bag then. Well Charlotte's even bigger now than Atlanta was back then at least in terms of a skyline but that's my first time going to a big city. And and I and I look. I look opened the window. Or might my guess is you look up there and there's my grandmother. In this in this guy scraper and more lately of the the landmark apartments in Atlanta and she's waving out the window. Oh man this is a city. So we'd we'd get on the elevator. And you know I'm I'm not the greatest with math. A few years later when I would take guided the SAT I'd be way up on the verbal but the math the way allied. Don't wanna talk about but even I could seal the control panel. The the PLO leader says twelve. This has fourteen. And I go hey Danny what war would have not Jane. He said well. Some people think the number thirteen is bad luck so there's no thirteenth floor. Well and that was my introduction. To true scale deck a phobia. So no you know. And especially in this age of victimization. For the victims. Of truce codec a phobia fearing it Friday the thirteenth. You were in your safe space you're you're and you're save sold. Right here. With JD in for prince here on the Vince Coakley radio program now already colds are coming in kind of explain what's going on here today. We welcome your Coles told free wherever you were listening. And even if you're listening with streaming audio on the Internet. 18092811. Tea. And die if you're in the Charlotte area. What in the day was called met troll lineup. It's 70457011. To an old yeah. Charlotte back in the in the seventies which is also a long time ago Charlotte in the seventies. Was it was metro line. Sounds kind of like it like a treaty doesn't it but that was the kind of urban Charlotte now look Charlotte's big an NFL city. NBA. Swimming pools movie stars. And met Carolina. Is a label best forgotten. But colds are already coming in and in the spirit of Bob. I'm Villa rush coming up later this morning. On many of these same stations OK on both of them. Open phone Friday we're gonna get to in fact when we come back. A Kohler won't tell us. About done about strips update as I guess on what's happening in the here and now. I it is Friday the thirteenth voted eight unlucky because you've got JD for us please stay with him. It is the fly gave the crew team addition. I'm Vince Coakley radio program and I'm Vince is not superstitious but he's not here support this could be you were unlucky day. Recovering congressman JD Hayward. Take your calls. Toll free from any place 1809 to 1110 or in the Charlotte area 70457. Know 1110. Friday the thirteenth but regardless of the Friday's. Think it back to school days. Musical film strip Friday's. New film strips still exist. Let's find out that the status of film strip was or at least a memory of same. From Charlotte Mike is our first caller this morning how you might. I figured he was loyal. I just denigrate done brother say what do we know Lance you're now going to only. Our film strip still in classrooms. Wow Albrecht and not that I went back out of school when the sixty is certainly take. An app for sure what to computers both screens in meteor or not but not when you sit down strips I'd number to appeal project. Checked the reels. And we ultimately don't projector. That's right what the other bill that that's warned them moving pictures you see the film strips from just those little things or the captions. But then we had the old sixteen millimeter and most schools had and we held in North Carolina it was my experience that bill and how old. At least in the hot points city's schools as they existed then and it set the film up in May be almost rockets and nine times out of ten. Like the two leaders. All of the the educational film industry. Were encyclopedia. Britannica. And I just wonder Jim handy was he like a mobile like Louis B Mayer. Barack Jack Warner at Warner Bros. Mr. Hindi we've got a new film now on personal hygiene I mean I. But but you're more I'm talking about and some of the acting. In some of these things I'm sorry. It was downright cheesy. OK like are set up remembered film projectors and what a lot. We kept chains too real but the. Yes but don't strips. Okay I didn't have felt the same item now. Oh I don't know the film project yet I blew a little legs on film projectors. Motion pictures film strips total stationary kind of photographed. And UBY can't shinji got real long and and that's the difference in technology. So Mike we're glad we could clear that up for you Appel thanks for listening to the Vince Coakley program this morning and calling it beyond the first caller. Now thirdly would brother Mike what I had bell was a failure to communicate. Because I'm talking film strips and Mike was talking the old sixteen millimeter projectors. All that notwithstanding. We've felt with Friday the thirteenth. Also from Charlotte Brandon. Has a comment on the number thirteen ended day eight pinned the what are worlds may affect risk a deck of folks Brandon welcome to our show. They've really made about a text. Yeah so I don't other chemical so that the Pope bohea. But he's long been lucky day for me. Electable and on the third and in my post what they were celebrated on Friday the thirteenth. Won't dare you haven't and look Euro fine upstanding member of society and in the broader sense. Brandon because we do understand I mean biologically. And win no life on this earth begin for you who know him. It was it was a thirteen. But think back in history. Well I mean there were thirteen original colonies right in the United States of America the original thirteen states thirteen worked out for us you win. But I'll play on Kagan at the next level through the no love the third and so loved so much to get married today. Ballmer where you are in third period ripper. Wow so your first birthday is celebrated on Friday the thirteenth. And you are going to greet your bride walking down the dial. Today. Friday the thirteenth. Ripper but sure that this a bit this that you're not gonna sneak it began her before the ceremony because that would be quote unlucky. So tell. Ours have a epithets at where's. The flip side B we we take whatever Cuban citizens are out there and we bump a very well. Love it but that doesn't well. It's good to have her living proof. Well congratulations. And it'll be a date easy to remember. Corporal I don't I don't wanna cast aspersions on now on why you chose that we will taken at face value. But happy wedding day and may you and your bride. Had many years of happiness. On what will be a very lucky Friday the thirteenth appreciate the call branded end. And that's good news we're not gonna ask Brandon ware is going on his honeymoon he's entitled to some secrets. But it's pretty cool head and his wedding. Today. Wow. If if you remember from the space program. Apollo thirteen. Jim bubble the commander. Scoffed at the number thirteen so they warned the launch. In and I think the launch clock was on central time even though it took place at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Since mission control and all that was at Debbie Johnson Space Center in Houston I think the official clogged they used was central time at any rate what ever. Time I've times' own they used. Global wanted to make sure they could leave legged. On the on the military clocked thirteen thirteen thirteen thirteen hour thirteen minutes and thirteen seconds. Well they did. It was it was kind unlucky. But it was. It was really lucky. We're blessed in terms Obama defected they got back home. And now Apollo thirteen no lunar landing but the resourcefulness. I'm Jim global and Fred Hayes injects wider and more importantly the technicians on the ground. Make that a great story. So I'd I didn't want to mention that. To bring it. But maybe I should have because if it were up front about it. A Bozo bus who understand. The whole notion of wedded bliss. We we understand a full well. That there are peaks and valleys an area out occasionally a proverbial bump in the road. Now for Brandon and other would be grooms. Today or any day. Just one quick no. Understand is the sage a lot of problems. She's always she's always ranked. There's a way to read JD used to go home floor of the congress you have those debates you do those broad sales on cable TV yet but. 99.9. Percent of the time miss Mary is right. And when she heat right. I am loathe the pointed out. Called an end from the upstate of South Carolina Intel pins Gerald is on the line wanting to talk about the thirteenth by Gerald. The warfare. And conflict they're no more talk about that a problem if you don't want to ensure. I don't know if you're portals fault themselves and certainly felt like seven panel that well since. Anyone born with a little right now are you talking about some not all step. Thought oh mercy headlines Brill good all those sermons the number of perfection banks would call Gerald Perry is breaking new news. In the NBA this is not a lucky day for the now former head coach of the Charlotte hornets were. The hornets delivered the steam today. Head coach Steve Clifford. Who favor. So. Not make it quite a steam but it's Friday the thirteenth through and that's all I gotta say about bad not an unlucky day. Vince Coakley still gainfully employed but the recovering congressman JD Hayworth isn't that prevents. More your calls some of my comments up next. This is still Vince Coakley radio program. I'm I'm I'm I'm. I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm. You can call us store free wherever you may be 1809. To wait 1110. George you're in the Charlotte vicinity which back in the day of polyester leisure suits we call the metro wide. Should should we brief. Or should we bring back bad description well why not for today in. Metro line 70457011. Jan you're listening saying wait a minute that's not Vince Coakley you would be correct. The recovering congressman JD Hayworth North Carolina native former channel four green bull sports anchor. And as mentioned earlier recovering member of congress. Having represented for six terms. The great state of Arizona you you can't make that up Kenya only in America. And with a decided lack of judgment the those in Georgia this show would be come in for my friend Vince. We were building word how were earlier. I talked about trees connect a phobia fear of the thirteenth. It's Friday the thirteenth. Oh by the way in ten days depending on your theology. IT EU may be really happy or a really sad are you big Oprah told you so did did you see this thing. The the story that is out. Betty a neurologist. I believe the article comes from the the Daily Express in the UK. And according to some theory is coach of the Bible suggests that the end of the world is imminent. Earth sent to be destroyed April 23. So you got ten dates. According to this story. And four Brandon. Who called in and said hey I was born. On the thirteenth and my first birthday was Friday the thirteenth and I'm getting married today. Brand new in your bride may just wanna stay on out of a ten day honeymoon you know what I'm saying. Of course the way to deal with all of these things you just go back to scripture. No man knows the time. Really out work no one. If you believe what you read in the new testament which. I do. Hold the other thing about Friday's I was targeting back for boomers and some X years Al peer. Are coated film strip Friday because after the spelling test in elementary school teacher would load up their film strip internal flights in. Wind through bad bad boy we'd learned something about some good and read along the captions. On the screen. What a folder to about film strips from Morrisville Jeff is on the line hello Jeff. Good morning how you doing this morning. Just. I have to laugh about that while what Lincoln we work commitment. Technology impaired our candy we've got one of those could ever maybe somebody remembered after a record player tied in with the new would be perks open. Well yeah those could change in the course of like an eight track tapes compounds that come program law and the program McCurry in Utah won't program. I remember in fact. Know that the newspaper in high point the high point enterprise. And the Associated Press they had like a history. Thing bad basically about twentieth century events and yet you'd have the record player and the electronic impulse that would move the film strip belong out. We were you seeks to limit Polanco bounces they can it would need to lose switch off when we go we laugh and and preaching Buchanan my ex. I had to break him of that Labor Day. Yeah that's right see that's what we're here to do on a Friday the world is tough enough in order to get to some of the tough stuff. But does on a Friday we kind of deserve. Is this is just a little respite from the headlines but don't worry when it comes to making headlines in commenting on them I am may repeat old fender. It will get back to that but this just kind of hit me this morning with the being Friday the thirteenth at what used to happen in school and all wet it was good to. To bring up in Jeff we appreciate you sharing that more still memory. 1809. To 11107045701110. For re daring Charlotte's. On both these burning topics. Of Friday the thirteenth good film strips we got Jim. Mike Jim. They are you doing. Thanks. I'm from Pennsylvania retired teacher come down here in Minnesota that cancer and in two months since. Two years. So right now managers around that I wouldn't psychologist and maybe got Hampton good. There's predictable BA's. Fear of that you know thirteen but it actually. Psychological main psychologist named for fear of Friday there in itself. And yet then compare about the outweigh. I am I am I right here Jim like the old Vicky Carson along with his mic in hand so I'm ready. Whereas. Pan out PA RA. At play day. BP. Sleep okay. We I am. Phobia. And I would go ahead and read human people BAR eight. And Cary BE DE TA eight PRI. And mobile content great and that's actually to work work. I thank god he used were from he has actual hero by the thirteen. Pulled and so it's power is still love addictive and could see Bruce go Mecca dove hook. We try again I'm supposed to be trained broadcaster. Pat do you say it for me Jim say it again brother. Has it that there would be to truly out phobia. Fifth. OJ brother hey you know in a more serious vein bush your hard dealing with this disease regardless where they are amen. And amen. No I was intact we checked out important college but I girl. And I described retired with my health about four years ago. Citing the pullout and they look at me and teacher the young teachers I pull out in the box thinking that box the film strips. And I pull them out and say I'm talking about Vietnam you don't get you want to get Vietnam history or something now. When my constitution they don't have been up there and strips can nab stuff today. You know him and know what I'm Nigerian thing. Let's should. Kids would fight. To roll that thing they were many corolla. You're gonna roll the film's script and I do mr. Jake and I direct and I do it. Yeah tie. There are tired you and doing that I am you know we can get films and digital Barak thank you scored tired that the. You know he's your mentioning this it brings back another memory gem by I was mentioning at the outset of the program. Over half century ago we went to the big city of Atlanta to see my grandparents they lived in this high rise. And so my my little sister my little brother and I would do would dispute who got to as we say in southern vernacular. Who got the mash at button. Press the elevator button. And he'll things have changed so much now with a simple click and would moving your finger endure all that's double the Smartphones and the computers. But Deb maybe we're just easily amused in all sincerity Jim. They're going to be in our prayers are putting on the prayer list brother it's good health and thanks so much for Paul. I always come back somebody's not scared of Friday the thirteenth they've they're scared of president truck. Yeah it's it's one of the usual suspects. We dip our toe into the political swamp and it's not only in Washington. Recovering congressman JD Hayworth for Vince Coakley please stay tuned. This is still Vince Coakley radio program. Have to rely on the sanity of Kim Jung an improvement over the president of the united. Barack could help him because he's one of the other Russian prime minute one of the guys over there is that we do not. Do diplomacy by tweet yeah Ankiel yanked him. Thank you for your much. Joy be harder. I don't think joys at risk identical course to be clear I think this was yesterday on the view on AB CTV. And does some blood to the predictably. And with a tire or some. Former repetition. I joy eight then that's an ironic first name for that lady is anyway joy says. What really scares her is president trump we we need to rely. On the North Korean dictator. And the KGB emperor it turned Soviet premier. Two words to be the same ones. All wade and enjoy you were you were asking about that other than other Russian guy whenever I believe you mean. Sergey Laver wrong. The Russian foreign minister. And enjoy your welcome. No look I get a book I him. I have certainly engaged in the rough and tumble of American political life. And yes rhetorically speaking near. You gotta have sharp Noble's. This is figurative works. But their does reach a point. We and it's. We know who's who dislike the president whomever the president may be wind may find it. Nothing. Not a single free new. On which they can compliment. Said chief executive. Not even something away from political life. They view you get the environmental. We we have two day. Wasn't so long to go even with ferry and and Jim. The teacher who is battling cancer who called us and why would go to him to talk about held. He kept showing film strips in the classroom how kids love dummy in this Internet age. Knew Jim mentioned the fact that Tim. I'm surprising. Source of information on those old film strips was the controversy. Surrounding the Vietnam War and yes that was. Division. We're divisive. Depending on your pronunciation but. When it came to to really. Critical crucial stuff. From post World War II. Right through the Cuban missile crisis. Remember it was a Michigan Republican Arthur Vandenberg. Working with their Democrat president Harry Truman what what was the expression. Partisan ship stops at the water's edge. Now that doesn't mean that everybody and becomes a yes man for the commander in chief who work happens to be an opposite bad timing theories some. Foreign policy crisis or in some situation where we see our military used. But this stuff where you hear applause. And the it it's really not incisive analysis since she's just got like modern day heckling me. And cheers for the heckling saying bed. The North Korean dictator. And this and the the Russian president. We have to rely on them. For sanity. Sorry stir up stuff like that makes me crazy. And I would be saying bad. If Barack Obama. We're still president and I had was some huge disagreements with former President Obama. South Carolina governor Nikki Haley not very far from the ABC broadcast center where the viewed takes place every day but. Former governor Haley now UN ambassador Haley. She did her best earlier this week to set the UN Security Council straight. On what exactly was happening. In Syrian. Here's some what ambassador Haley had to say. Who don't fits. Only a monster. To justice. Only a monster target civilians and then insurers that there are no ambulances. To transfer the wounded. No hospitals to save their lives no doctors or medicine to ease their pain. I could hold up pictures of all of this killing and suffering for the council to see. But what would be the point and monster who is responsible for these attacks has no conscience. So Nikki Haley laying it out against Syrian strongman a sawed it. Who took over that dictatorship. For his daddy. And my personal position out in Arizona. You may have seen him on one of the cable programs M exude the gesture MD. And American Muslim his his family fled. The aside regime. When old man decide to go over but if I'm correct I believe Sunnis grandpa. Ran the opposition newspaper. So they had targets on their backs. But they got the heck out of out of Damascus I was gonna say out of dodge but that doesn't work in Syria. Knowing my geography there here's the serious and salient point. Doctor gesture. I believe it was on FaceBook. May the point you can disagree about American involvement but don't think for a second. MetLife in Syria these days is a picnic don't think for a second but these attacks are not going all I need. And oh yeah. We're picking up the fact that those attacks were credible it's not some sort of stunt. Like you see elsewhere. No stood here next door open phones but will begin with a memory here's an NC state guys gonna say good things about a Carolina guy. JD prevents our two is ahead. This is still Vince Coakley radio program. From the heart of the Carolina. Bringing the DC fans into focus the lens so liberty. This is no big Stokley radio program. Last winter I was diagnosed with Nero cognitive disorder primary progressive FA Zia. That affects my language expression. I wanna tell you this because in the future I will not be doing any public speaking. I can still to do enjoy the company of friends and traveling with my wife Jeanne but not able to address groups as I have done in the past. Woody Durham. Who passed away last month. Who was remembered Sunday he would Carmichael auditorium in Chapel Hill woody Durham. Who will. Always be remembered by so many including those of us who wore the red white. Woody Durham. The voice of the Tar Heels. That recording released the first day of June 2016. In what he told more about did the diagnosis. I'm progressive primary if Spiezio listen. While learning of this diagnosis which was a bit of a shock for gene and million yes quite an ironic one at that. It also brought a sense of relief to us in terms of understanding what was happening to me and how best to deal whether it. And one way woody in jeans and a legion of others. Carolina fans are no. One way. They chose to deal with that and continued to deal with it. Is awareness of just what exactly a phase CA is and efforts to be involved in research. Again no wait woody Durham describing. What he was going to do moving forward on that first day of June 2060. We want to make people more aware of primary progressive for things you know. And the impact that these disorders can have on individual's family and friends. Along with raising awareness we hope to encourage financial giving for continued research and treatment in our state as well as nationwide. I also hope to meet many more of the people that enjoyed a radio broadcast when I was privileged to be the voice of the Tar Heels for forty years. Those greetings and kind words have meant so much to me in the last five years. And hold a very special place in my heart. Woody Durham I held a very special place in my life. Not only as a kid watching him on channel two in Greensboro growing up. In high point but leader. In my broadcasting career. I posted something on social media I wanna share with you this morning. If you're looking for a state Carolina a screen here you will not find it. My friend didn't meant to woody Durham passed away recently and I've been reflecting. On his life and legacy. There is no doubt that woody blip Carolina blue and that's putting it mildly he loved the Tar Heels. He'd love being the voice. So the two are you it's. Those of us who did not share that referenced sometimes lampooned his log resemble modern. But his affection was not an expectation. It was passionate it was personal. Yet it was also very public. The public woody in the private woody combined seamlessly and courageously. In that farewell statement he wrote and voice to two years ago. In it he explained how he had been diagnosed with primary progressive of Asia how bad disease was affecting his ability to communicate and why it would force him to in the public speaking and interaction. So enjoy. Like so many I was shocked. Privately I mused it dead this was so horrible fate. As if god metal walled old Henry at rod sterling to collaborate on a real life short story. Complete with an ironic twist for woody Durham the man who had spent his professional life using descriptive language. To impart the action and excitement of sporting events to be robbed a bad ability. Seemed unspeakable cruel. Vineyard scripture reminds us. Bad God's ways are not always so not understanding of their for not wanting to react to what to do what I deemed unfair. I reached out to what he would hand written note praising the professionalism. Of his goodbyes. You can listen to that statement as we just did I think you'll agree. There was that authoritative voice accurately describing what was happening in his life. And bravely moving forward. When I was contacted a few days prior to his passing about his deteriorating suit Jones situation in condition. But the shock of two years a goal return to. To the tenth power I had no idea that the FCC would advance so rapidly and dramatically. Amidst the prayers of for what he and his family are here I get recalled how woody Durham. Was it true broadcast. Effective professional. I more bold led his preparation in his work ethic. Speaking work. I would be remiss if I did mention that woody Durham gave me my first job in television. I was in my senior year at state ten became WP DF TV substitute sportscaster. When what he had to broadcast Carolina games on the road. After graduation I became channel 48 sports reporter spinning a year learning from woody. Before getting an offer out of the know and Carolina blue. To become the weeknight sports anchor channel four in Greenville Spartanburg. As a young man in a hurry. I failed to truly recognize the contribution bed would be made to my own career. Only later. When he announced his retirement as the voice of the Tar Heels. Did I write to really thank him. Today I marvel at the career move he made on my behalf. His love for all things Carolina did not prevent him from giving a high point kidded stage student. Not to mention one of the biggest why Shelton wolfpack sports history. In early chance to work in TV. For a bad decision. All right will remain eternally grateful. For his wife Jean three sons Wes and Taylor for his extended family I offer prayers of comfort and support. And for public consumption. And consideration. From behind this microphone let me see this loudly and clearly. Always think of me. As a wall packer. For woody. Rest in peace. What he will already. Durham. That was quite a send off Sunday. It Carmichael auditorium. And maybe it wasn't so public. And maybe you haven't shared it with somebody. But this year we talk about woody. Rivalry aside at the collegiate level. So money in your life was sure minter so nobody in your life. Showed you the way it's somebody in your life did you think them. Do you still have time to think of them told free for many plays 1809. To wait 1110. Rory in Charlotte and vicinity 7045701110. It's a Vince Coakley programmer. The same Vince. It's the recovering congressman JD Hayworth. Your goals and more straight ahead. This is still Vince Coakley radio program. The late great woody Durham with his goal of Carolina's plus national championship the Dean Smith era. So we editorial fans know that what they JD. Met in 1957. The Tar Heels beat Kansas yet that. Dean Smith I think was on forget Allen steed but the jayhawks think you're right. When JUN a seven footer by the name Wilt Chamberlain but remember. All the good trips. To the final four. In fact I was so I was working with woody 1981. Ted national championship game Carolina vs Indiana wrote called. It was earlier than Diddy. Right earlier that day eight the assassination attempt on President Reagan. I believe or maybe it was the day before. I think it was the same day. Was. From the heart of the Carolina. Those of us who did not share that referenced sometimes lampooned his log resemble modern. But his affection was not an expectation. It was passionate it was personal. Yet it was also very public. The public woody in the private woody combine seamlessly and courageously. In that farewell statement he wrote and voice to two years ago. In it he explained how he had been diagnosed with primary progressive of Asia how bad disease was affecting his ability to communicate and why it would force him to in the public speaking and interaction. So enjoy. Like so many I was shocked. Privately I mused to bed this was so horrible fate. As if god metal walled old Henry at rod sterling to collaborate on a real life short story. Complete with an ironic twist for woody Durham the man who had spent his professional life using descriptive language. To import the action and excitement of sporting events to be robbed a bad ability. Seemed unspeakable cruel. Vineyard scripture reminds us. Bad God's ways are not our ways so not understanding and therefore not wanting to react to what to what I deemed unfair. I reached out to what he what I hand written note praising the professionalism. Of his goodbyes. You can listen to that statement as we just did I think you'll agree. There was battle authoritative voice accurately describing what was happening in his life. And bravely moving forward. When I was contacted a few days prior to his passing about his deteriorating suit your own situation and condition. But the shock of two years you go return to. To the tenth power I had no idea that the FCC would advance so rapidly and dramatically. Amidst the prayers and for what he and his family are here I get recalled how woody Durham. Was it true broadcast. Effective professional. I'm more pulled at his preparation in his work ethic. Speaking to work. I would be remiss if I did mention that woody Durham gave me my first job in television. I was in my senior year at state ten became WP DF TV substitute sportscaster. When what he had to broadcast Carolina games on the road. After graduation I became channel 28 sports reporter spinning a year learning from woody. Before getting an offer out of globe know and Carolina blue. To become the weeknight sports anchor channel four in Greenville Spartanburg. As a young man an artery. I failed to truly recognize the contribution bed would be made to my own career. Only to later. When he announced his retirement as the voice of the Tar Heels. Did I write to really thank him. Today I marvel at the career move he made on my behalf. His love for all things Carolina did not prevent him from giving a high point kid in state student. Not to mention one of the biggest wash Yeltsin will exports history. An early chance to work in TV. For a bad decision. All right will remain eternally grateful. For his wife Jean three sons Wes and Taylor for his extended family I offer prayers of comfort and support. And for public consumption. And consideration. From behind this microphone let me say this loudly and clearly. Always think of me. As a war packer. For woody. Rest in peace. What he wouldn't already. Durham. That was quite a send off Sunday. But Carmichael auditorium. And maybe it wasn't so public. Then maybe you haven't shared it with somebody. But this year we talk about woody. Rivalry aside at the collegiate level. So money in your life. Was sure minter so nobody in your life showed you the way it somebody in your life did you think given. Do you still have time to think of them told free for many police 1809. To wait 1110. Rory in Charlotte and vicinity 7045701110. It's the Vince Coakley programmer. The same Vince. It's the recovering congressman JD Hayworth. You're goals and more straight ahead. This is still Vince Coakley radio program. The late great woody Durham with his goal of Carolina's plus national championship the Dean Smith era. So we editorial fans know that later they JD. Pettit 1957. The Tar Heels beat kids as yet that. Dean Smith I think was on forget Allen steed but the jayhawks think you're right. When JUN a seven footer by the name of Wilt Chamberlain but remember. All good trips. To the final four. In fact I was so I was working with woody 1981. Ted national championship game Carolina vs Indiana wrote called. It was earlier than ditty. Right earlier that day eight the assassination attempt on President Reagan. I believe or maybe it was the day before. I think it was the same day. And you were serious questions about going head to the final word you wanted Carolina lost. It her simple. Channel 28 did the NBC affiliate Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill they'd they'd satellite truck and I was at one of the watering holes. In Chapel Hill they were they were they said were we gonna name this thing I said bolster its we've got a neighbor for TV guide before you put hurled beer. Let's call it Beers or tears. Chapel Hill and sadly for Carolina fans it was the latter. And technology and budget issues being what they were way back in 1981. What he called in after that game. It was tough to hear him. Over the din of the board crowd in others saying well we're just get on TV. But you can you can hear the disappointment Woody's voice. As I said he bled Carolina blue. But a whole lot of folks. Even now fans of other schools would listen to him soma. For obvious reasons I believe it was doctor James Ralph scales. Who was president back in the day at Wake Forest. And Billy packer who had played basketball at wake. Our river he shared this particular one of the ACC telecast. Brit or how wake they would they would be that big four tournament at the start of the ACC season and it. And the big four would carve each other up. But curiously. More often than not through the mists of my memory. Cold TC would have the demon deacons. Played great and week would end up winning the big four it seemed to be it happened more often than not. But again memory complete tricks anyway I remember Billy packer. So I think it with. I I still think drove for a girl's loans are really bad it was a little rise. Drum black girl with Bill Carter. And different doubled all the bones McKinney. Margaret the shrine bowl win when Jim Thacker the former channel three sports anchor was it reducing all of us and I was a big. I always do it. Borrowed persuasion hurdle to broad. Check report to order so we borrow in all of would you talk abroad boards would contribute were there any. Blood blood but Billy packer to put old story. That they'll Wake Forest resident. Doctor James rile scales I believe was he was getting up to leave with a couple of minutes left. And Ed Deb Billy was not do in the game that night he says doctor scales where you go he said I gotta go up to the caller. Should a forty. Scale since I have to hear the disappointment in his voice. But actually more often than not people listen to what we know element kind of oh golly what is that term. All the German term for taking delight in others discomfort. I shouldn't draw right so the liked you can correct my word power and I'm sorry if I'm lapsing into like a norm Crosby mellow props routine. We ritual for the but what he was sincere in championing the Tar Heels. But he also was just agreed broadcaster. And it was a great teacher. In so I asked you earlier. The bidder in your life. They did you have time to think that. I emerged from the you. The nurses schism. That comes from being a broadcaster and a public officials like people who should JD that that Obama is a narcissistic you yeah and it's everybody who's a public person. Deals with a certain amount of narcissism okay. But as a young man in a hurry I don't know that I adequately think what he. And as I said earlier I sat down and wrote him a letter. When he was retiring after forty years whose voice of the Torre is think about that. Ned is as relevant as a guy in the headlines today. Rich cub check back in the Carolinas after all that time in Southern California with the lakers and in the front office. Former Oriole great Mitch Kupchak. And is now Leo hornets new GM. Issuing the pink slip to Steve Clifford today. If you haven't heard yet Steve is out as the hornets head coach may be that was inevitable given. The word its inability to staying enough opponents and out of the playoffs again. But Brigham. Rich. Was playing. When woody was doing play by play for Champloo. And any time someone whose career spans four decades. In a job and loose. In a job as recognizable. And so what he's was. Doing your own tar heel sports. See his impact was such that yeah absolutely Carmichael auditorium was pool. In fact as one who left broadcasting and women to politics. Now now here we don't mistake me on this. Because this is not. Mint as it did so. I realize that many people. View of politics. Pejorative Lee of their your big word AA failed they distrusted it's bad it's funky. In The Hague even I was talking about the current environment to politically a few minutes ago. But what he is a public figure. Understood the importance of interaction. It's wide it's why did so many speeches to the rams club that's why I stood there and took pictures on picture day. Would everybody wanted to come see him he understood correctly. Dead behind a microphone he was. A representative. Of his alma mater. Now the real irony. And if you're state fan or you're in the upstate of South Carolina. And used to listen to the man I succeeded. Don't do in the Clemson games the late great Jim Phillips. You you may find this hard to believe blood. Woody was actually as he was dealing with OK I'm I'm leaving doing the ACC games receding Chesley. Now I'm on the tar heel sports network. And he was told to look you're gonna see it through the wind your school partial objectivity. You know gave them the advice to guys the wolfpack sports network. Coach thaksin and Wally are easily. Rendell you know held out there. We'll open up the phones anything you wanna talk about open phone Friday to get you ready for lunch. 1890. Wait eleven to 70457011. Did. JD forbearance and please stay tuned. This is still Vince. Coakley radio program. So I'll be setting new priorities in my life. But also be leaving incredibly proud of what we've accomplished. Found some you know my story my dad died when I was sixteen. These the daughter they ate my daughter race. And I just don't want to be one of those people look and act in my life finish immortality my kids when I know placed on another term. They'll only know me as a weakened father. House speaker poll Ryan. Saying it's a career at the end of this term he's he's going home. It's a recovering congressman JD Hayworth in for Vince Coakley. All of the phones of talk about whatever you wanna talk about but since I'm behind the Mike I've got my own feet whose. 1809. To 821110. Absolutely told three wherever you may be or in ethnic fifth as we used to say. In the age of polyester leisure suits in the seventies in Charlotte in the vicinity AJ met troll and a so little 45711. Jen I know I'm gonna get a bimbo hey don't call it metro line where how he managed just got to dust off. These expressions and bring him back from time to time. I had the unique experience of knowing poll Ryan first as a congressional staffer. Before he was elected to congress I believe at the age of 28. Mean usual. And polls served with me on the Ways and Means Committee no doubt he's a Smart guy. The current guy who who was known as a policy want to the point where 88. Poll what is it. Yep poll would stop until we all about how the watch was made out the second and worked it. Which time zone you were in people who loved all the intricate details at times it may did give a gold. For him to explain exactly what was going on but bear ad did the press conference. Announcing his retirement he was being absolutely truthful. Now so he babysitting or sale yet JD everybody says they're they're according to spend time with family let me tell you something. And I know this from experience. When my own brood about he worth hacienda. We're from across the number lied when I was elected. My eldest daughter who was should just finishing high school heading off to Arizona State. Our middle daughter are younger daughter was. Three. And the baby of our bunch his majesty the baby are little boy he was done. Was less than a year old the day I was sworn into the House of Representatives. Our son was thirteen months old I have enabled the floor pitchers in every paper. Across the country is we're doing the pledge of allegiance I get that little guy on my shoulder. And the pockets of my suit filled with bottles in case say he started you know Craig you're there on the floor which he didn't he just. Basically snooze through that to give you some perspective. That thirteen month old. In January of 1995. Is now hold 24. And just finishing second to fifth in the 2006 mid terms wasn't all bad I got to be back home. Our younger daughter was in high school at that point. Our son was in middle school. But the political life. Ain't exactly a bed of roses. For kids. From the vantage point your kids it's okay when they're little. And it's like kindergarten through even about the fifth green. But once middle school storage and adolescents said CNN and you know just got to being obnoxious and contrary for the heck up. From middle school through high school wanted to college forget about it. If you're conservative. Donated this is by I'd I would say it probably happens to other guys on and ladies on the other side of the child to. But if you're in politics. Your kids are gonna hear about it. Especially if you're in the middle of a campaign where. We're things get really. Really. Nasty. So bull Ryan. Is is quitting. The question is who is mixed. Kevin McCarthy's the majority leader he stepped in it last time withdrew from all bad. And no alone as majority leader. Steve's police. Did the whip that means the guy who counts the votes. Steve's police he is dubbed. Was rumored to have ambitions to do this but yesterday on the Fox News Channel. Sandra Smith and Steve's police about the about the speakership here's what he had to say. And you mentioned that meeting at the White House last I think we've got a picture of and you arch. You're standing merit in the room next to your colleague Kevin McCarthy YouTube are seen as the front runners. For this role would you run up against him. Fifty dollars in nada so that before I mean never run against Kevin wouldn't run against Kevin. All right so there's this police now. Couple ways to interpret the if McCarthy takes a powder like he did before Ryan was elected speaker may these police is gonna get into it. But if he doesn't will will do what happens. Funny you should mention that. A lot of talk about a north Carolinians mark metals. Part of liberty caucus the conservative caucus the freedom caucus. Freedom caucus I had to sort through the Rolodex in my mind for different organizations which I belong to me I was they. So the word comes out Ryan's gonna quit here's what north Carolina Republican congressman mark. Meadows had to say. Leadership is never been on my bucket list and it's not on my bucket list today in spite of this announcement I can't say that as we look guys who. Putting forth a new agenda again and it. Months and weeks to come. I look forward to working with the speaker this leader this whip. All right so he's gonna stick with the current leadership team he says he's not running. If you're in the upstate of South Carolina. My Beltre gelding was also retiring from congress ported out constitutionally. You know what this is an article one. Here's all it says about this particular job but house shall choose. It speaker. So trade boy judge you have to be a labour congress these bigger and thousands suddenly tongues are wagon is trade and credit debit speaker as an ex congressman technically it could happen constitutionally. It could dampen. Right now it's on. Its open Poland Friday. And we go bad to the folds from Charlotte Tories on the line to talk about the late great woody Durham might Tony. Do a fine sir sorry were up against the clock about a 45 seconds say what's on your mind pleaser. And it was a plumber are viewed from a wooded dharma at big new one of the greatest ever what we did this what they do in chapel real. On the ground there at Capitol Hill campus get rid of that stupid a competitor. Specter and put awarded dorm speculators they it. It's actually the way I tell you are dead you put bed Ford will see how people feel about that. 18092. Lead eleven to 70457. Know 1110. Tony says put up a statue of woody. You know what used to say to being. I Obey whatever is Lisa that we B drive around campus he says he'd say doing if you see that old well. But jurors don't come to your iron from beloved Pittsburgh broke don't go to the doctor have your head exempt. How well exhibit if you think there should be a statue forty in Chapel Hill or elsewhere for talk about whatever's on your mind. JB prevents we're coming right back. I'm reminded in the course of the debate on the tax them on the budgets and now. I mean so called balanced budget amendment of money to participate in and I'm reminded in the course of the debate on the tax film on the budget and now. Being. So called balanced budget amendment and Aaron king's words god never intended for any group of people to live in superfluous. Inordinate wealth how others live in abject deadening covers. I've bad is the former speaker who could be speaker of the house yet again if Democrats win a majority in November. That is said Nancy Pelosi of California and you know age is this this was coming back as the congress comes back. After the MLK a recess. And dubbed. She eight you know you got a law of how why how remarkably. Hey you know I talked about narcissus a budget but sometimes there's eight total lack of self awareness. Is Nancy Pelosi quoting doctor Kenya. And dog and about how people are not supposed to live in superfluous and inordinate wealth. Check out the financial disclosure form for Nancy Pelosi and her spouse. Big missing any meals. Talk about superb Lewis an inordinate wealth and no he's not raising it is because she's doing it. Trying to web piggyback golf club. Recalling the words of Doctor King after the MLK. I'm national holiday yen and recess. So who should be the next speaker of the house. And if if it's Pelosi will bear beat an impeachment of this president a lot of folks think it's basically inevitable. That's what they think the Moeller investigation Isabel. Your thoughts on that will go 1809. To 1110. Former Charlotte and the 7704. Or 5701110. Now before. The brake Tony this being open phones Friday Tony said hey. Don't put up a statute to woody Durham output of the statue in Chapel Hill. And I was tell you what what are used to tell me about the old world. And and you know maybe ride their close vicinity but but Tony said some bills. Quote get rid of those confederate statutes. Now I got to tell you we were up against the break it and have a chance to engage in a conversation with Tony. So I'm gonna ask you and Ben Tony's listening to. Statues. Are history. And why do you wanna abolish history I mean you have to understand. North Carolina may have been the twelve of the thirteen news staged to initially secede from the union South Carolina. Being the first. North Carolina may have been Nextel as well that was part of the CSA that's part of history. Just as the University of North Carolina knows the first. State. Sanctioned university. Can remember your history of higher education in America Harvard and was the first. Institution of higher learning. The College of William and Mary was second. North Carolina followed in close succession. James cape poll. Was a Carolina grand. The guy who went to war with Mexico. We'll history repeated so so so again I'll throw that nobody you babe and the man admit not just a statue what he but taking down part is during. I don't have a problem with what he's schedule I think it's a great idea Tony but I don't think you since sore history. In any way that we would censor your quote she'd nod FaceBook here. What everything politically you're welcome to a just don't come all the radio and told nasty ads that are free expression they met and abs to be something of mayors we we don't engage in our poll real good. We don't sit here and 'cause double blue streak on the radio. Telephones we go open phone Friday getting your ready for rush from New York South Carolina parent who's on the line IBM. I care arm or a question an open mind I questioned or you. Why are monitored their country and they Wear the wire back tortured that you didn't during the Holocaust. They get other than acting killing her and beat couple things. And they all go in there aren't men aren't India. They left Hindu mother and baby dead with their babies that they are dead mother Brett. They are manipulate. And and he'd hate women genitalia. State they make manage key an eager still. Why do we do their YY and they're. These people are acquired via latter country can you tell me that. I can tell you in the same way the constitution says it's. Dare Shelby. No religious test. For the holding of office oral public trust in the United States right there in the constitution now. In terms of who is allowed in the country. It's absolutely true that this country has a right to to determine who might be a security threat. But when you single out. Because again the First Amendment. Guarantees freedom of religion now that does not mean president trump was well within his rights. Two remaining in fact not only within his rights as president park oval law as president he could deem certain cause this certain note countries. That may be. Muslim majority countries to deem them nation's bad bed have harbored threats toward the United States. And moved to restrict folks from coming here coming in here from there Jimmy Carter did it with Iran. In 1970 known. So trump is within his rights they are but we do not restrict solely on basis of faith because there is freedom of religion. Don't misunderstand me we better take a much more. Active role in deciding who can come into this country at war. But that's another topic for another day and hopefully you and I will get together again soon. My special thanks every one allowing me to comment for my pal fiscal wing rush is coming up. JD Hayworth saying you stayed braves. Stayed free. Stay tuned.
