And and the next few days and no depending on no video services and win a new and in wherein no soul and so forth so will be a huge. But it's a it's a sad day in that we've lost to Rhode Charlotte's favorite son. And it's a glorious day because what Billy Graham works for all of his life. As has come to fruition today out there that's that that's the way I feel about it I'm I get teary eyed about this because I'm so happy for him. That. When when my I've when my dad died. Who also was do they ended up being mayor over a preacher are gonna episcopalian priest. But I edit what do I coupon thing about the Graham family the greatest. President I think you can leave behind to those that you leave behind is the assurance that you've lived your life to the point that. You're in good favor with god. And that if you believe in what they believed in then you have to be happy for them because. Eternity. I think about many of my friends today to my non believer friends today and. We all scare the hell out of me. Because. I always kind of looked at my dad and and thought to myself if you. If you believe. And you're wrong. Oh well. But if you don't believe. And you're wrong. And attack Lleyton forward his brother in law just couple seconds so long look forward to that Amaro humbled that he would allow us some time mom on knows this day. And we're gonna hear a lot from Billy Graham this afternoon in between know our regular programming and know things that we you know don't do and so on and so forth. But today is a day about Billy Graham. It did it occurs to me as I was reading this morning. Is it says a Graham preach to nearly 215. Million people around the world in his more than sixty years. But ministry. This message re image to millions more through radio television and webcast. How many millions of people do you think his message is reaching today. How many. Well how many people do you think get a you can answer this question. How many people will hear one. Line from a Billy Graham actuality it today and may be. Be so moved just to pursue. Christianity a little bit further nerve there will be people converted today. Because they were exposed to Billy Graham and they are massive publicity that is surrounding his death. Everything I know about Billy Graham says that he was not crazy about all the attention that had been put on film. Because he wanted all the attention to be put on Jesus. But. How happy must TV today. That his ministry. Today. On this very day is reaching. Probably more than those 200 and some odd million that it took him sixty years to preach to during his lifetime. A great day here Christian. To great day. Give your life to Christ we let him come in your life and you'll find what it means to be joyful. Who's talking eleven Tim WD TV Charlotte. Continuing in just eighteen cup rich immersive goddess extended now. Here in this life remembering the reverend Billy Graham. I used to called G 1110 WDT. I'm not. Humbled that Lleyton forward Billy Graham's brother in law would do allow us sometime today about he has indeed. And he is say if you go to while Lleyton Ford ministries dot org you can now. I'll find out about his own ministry and and know what he's up to hotel is also involved with the Billy Graham. Other organization for thirty some odd years mr. Ford thank you for joining me appreciate so much. Don thanks for calling we are very appreciative of the interest today. You yum you've got to be a great voice in your own right a man is so wide that that booming you sound like George Beverly shade of me. Well that's a great compliment. On a first of all how is everybody family red are enough FaceBook. Well we haven't talked to everybody at my my wife I can't do it easier this morning so it all the starters should just sort of produced. Similar to talk to. But had a pregnant wife but I would. What my wife says that the more ethnic and what will feel that he's where we wanted to be and where he wants to want to speak in court got lots of debate. And and anybody that I'm not vote was the son of an episcopal priest to know when my dad died I can remember telling people that would comeuppance fail on so sorry I would say oh my gosh it's a great day it's. If you believed in what he believed in you just have to be you have to be happy for him and I think one of the greatest gift that anybody even. A world renowned evangelist can lead back to their family is no doubt as to where they are. You know. Years ago Billy spoke. One of these big piece many Serbs Charlie got a special award and pet on a new blue suit he kind of smiled and simmer for a some practical mind and who saluted where that might provide diplomacy well or not. It's all the wonderful story about the payments Einstein who is on a train and watch this together let's connect this don't don't worry don't worry and he says yeah but I don't norm go. And then Billy says. You know where you're going I don't know where I'm going. So that's that's where he's gone. I have a patent job that I have done of they did affiliates are also put my treat open gate. And I saw that want to pay that big especially vessels symbolic the lord let gay Jesus. And then go door to so many through that gate and roof is gone through there about yes. Like that's cool. I saw hearse leaving Mon three Don no channel three little bit earlier. Com and I a town that to be tremendously sad. Because her. I didn't see that that's interest rates have been here. Yeah it was I I don't know loaded got a do you I mean will he go back there again do you think. Are you guys are just that would be part of what however whatever they decide to do over the next. Coming days on us. I bet that hasn't been decided I think it'll be a few days before little shirts I don't know what happens between now meant. You remember that I do remember though. The last time out like an hour up there and of course he has let us see or hear much along plant but we've just wondered how long Google or. I have I'm still here. Thought that we left. There are also third he reached out termed she called Billy fractured successfully prank that. A Big Brother Ahmad and rob back to Charlotte I wish I conspicuously. And then the moment so announcement villain who were just spoke at state beset all by. But now they're there will be brilliant record or Charlotte of course this result. And what are you what are you I read that in no your peace with Tim called bunker earlier today to. What do you think the almighty meant. I think it work how much satellite go. Because it does this was still home this was still the farm or distillery and he wore blue Jones. All it is all his home that's right bad. Farm out there red clay out I'm not. I'm park route that was that was still only loved it loved to come here ready. As it is very vital it like to live here all would love to come home to Charlotte that it provided will be here I thought I actually root. I read. A little bit today where he was at some point of his life was kind of cushion it questioning. In his own mind deal literal. Interpretation. Of the Bible and he had gone up someplace and had put the Bible on a stump. And was. Questioning whether or not he was gonna believe it or whether or not he was not going to believe it. Did he ever talk about that. He hit it yes genuine hero he's written about that a lot rocker. That that happened and I remember he says I've got to take all of this like camp but they live apart that I don't understand. Billy is now over and over electoral system essentially you have to believe. This one particular way you know you have to interpret scripture but it took it as god word in the parts in and understand. You saw late has got about those some great. He talked and they did they did speak with authority because all of a sudden the Bible says that wasn't they have ideas that will look you believe god its says. I meant it a little bit earlier that I I grew up on a different part of the country and I can remember Lockett past the TV screen and seeing him it though one of his so crusades but I never paid a whole lot of attention and I and I suppose in part because. I was already going to church every Sunday my folks got me up made me Wear those itchy gray slacks every Sunday well Laura wanted to or not. Com but I all very thankful that it did that my career landed me in no Charlotte because now I understand more about the Billy Graham's tonight and I certainly understand more about why and what he means to. To this community but I believe it was the 9/11. Talk speech that he gave where he talked about people that are mad at god are questioning their faith. Some we all go through that oh whether or not we feel guilty about it or not at any given point but then it's OK to do that is it not. When he's here when he spoke at memorial service the logic if you go after nine elevenths. Instead people wonder why he says I don't know I don't understand why. And remember all across to users and so also my god why yeah there are a lot there are a lot of wise and I think Billy restraint. Earlier rates later CS Lewis that when I get say hello I have a lot of questions finalized because our just let it all all allies city. My dad was a big CS Lewis. Guys have got all of this it is books a lot of us theology books are good enough bookshelf in my study yet to go home but CS Lewis was so somebody that he. Gosh tried so hard to get me interest today and and I never got incidents CS Lewis until after he passed I was almost that he had a quit telling me to get into stood before I'd do get interest to. You're an evangelist you you preach the word of god as well have you ever gone through a period of life for youths questioned god. I have. I have I've gone through through 31. Remember. Coming home in Charlotte from. Prepare for Chris seriously in Seattle wash down on the way home it seemed as if god aside. I got home on the Charlotte told my wife first so speculative garbage does look like you keep proper channel. Chase say they'll put me down for several hours but just listing who have poured out my questions. And then I remember you put her hands on my face fiddler quite in my eyes and so I love you I love you I love you my belt brought itself. Votes like yes let god use those planned statistically don't touch me. So yes I've had questions and the well there's not wrong doubts sometimes can lead this could be portrait. We lost a son when he was 21. And I remember my lace and leather god is god or the original government. So it's just a starter question that I have. Com I can't thank you enough for giving us some time today I know this must be a a terrible day in and they and a beautiful day all of none in the same. In in the same mend and interior different emotions you'll you'll miss the physical Billy Graham but gosh. I just no doubt as to worry is today that's has got to be just a glorious a feeling and anybody who is a Christian cannot have should understand what I just said. Don thank you Ezra sensitive and I appreciate it. Thank you very much Billy with Billy would always say Atlanta radio broad broad broad yet god bless you real good. I'm sure that is for the viewers or listeners that they now spiritual. You want war and one more thing John service that could be TB WBP Robert got him on national radio. Well we. Then you're right and Charlie Crutchfield which is a man that I knew as well time was a friend of Billy Graham's and we got a clip of him talking about get nothing milking the cows and no mom had breakfast ready at 530 and we turn on the radio. Not to a W BT and now that that clip is near and dear to those us sue us spend anytime at this radio station because that's one of the reasons that such an honor to work here is because of our history. Thanks John appreciate that thank you late in Florida appreciate you. He goes and room yeah very cool. So we'll bring to life and reverend Billy Graham and give your life to Christ. Can have the greatest joy you've got to know who used on 1110 WT. Charlotte's. Continuing team coverage without price. To fill that in a void in your life. We grab nothing else satisfied. You who's talking 1110 WDT. Mock all of us have read somewhere but the cows gave more milk and they listen to music. Console. Ever morning where we've started melting about 3 o'clock 330 years. Mama always had breakfast at 5:30. In the morning. Raided farms but our number we would listen to WBT. I think that was illness relational lair and those studies submitted just barely got home. And our member of the brow problems. And Charlie Crutchfield. We root milk those cows. Of the music that okay. All right Jim Merrill left. I think every media outlet in town has been ready for the passing of a Billy Graham but do you but Jim Merrill put together some are really great pieces let me share one of those with you know. The life of Billy Graham has covered such a broad period of the life of this nation and has touched so many people throughout the world. That he stands alone among Americans whose driving force in life has been to bring the saving message of Jesus Christ to all who would receive it and be transformed by it in one today I can reach more people. And the apostles did it during their whole lifetime. His success has been attributed by theologians in part to the fact that he didn't threaten when he preached and never tried to sway anyone with guilt. Don't mind this important in the Bible. But remember. Did you don't mind has been affected by sitting so that you cannot think Joseph way to god you cannot think you'll later Christ. At the time of the dedication of Charlotte's Billy Graham Library in May of 2007. Mayor Pat McCrory tried to put Graham's life and perspective citing his local roots. Lee Graham is indeed the favorite son of Charlotte, North Carolina. He grew up in this house just four miles from where we stand today off of park road. However you never strayed far from his roots. As the son of Charlotte dairy farmer even as he went on to preach to more than 210. Million people. Across this country and across this world. Gram born in Charlotte on November 7 1918. Remembered the area as being unbelievably poor during his childhood. This father losing his savings of 4000 dollars in the failed farmers and merchants bank in Charlotte. But it was a happy childhood Billy Graham spoke of his father is a man with a dry sense of humor who kept his family and neighbors laughing by the hour. In the video biography Billy Graham God's ambassador younger brother Melvin Graham remembers those days. We were very typical country people and my brother who is proud and hey here's a look at the math never that disarming. He worked. Only because she's my dating required in case. He was interested. Primarily in baseball. And I never will forget in their late twenties I was very small. My brother was a young teenager. Babe Ruth came to put on an exhibition with the Yankees here in Charlotte and daddy gotta. Introduction. With a very prudent and then let billing as shake his hand and then. I think video for got back. When he returned to Charlotte and 1996. For a crusade at Bank of America Stadium. Billy Graham spoke of those early days when radio was young and have the advantage it gave him over the earlier evangelists. There evangelist before make didn't have amplification. To even village Sunday didn't have amplification. And then radio came along and arm I'm by used to milk cows in the barn. And listen to the BBT in Charlotte and the raw office there and Charles Crutchfield. As a boy Graham had actually heard Billy Sunday professional ballplayer turned preacher. Who passed through Charlotte in 1943 has lasting impression as a five year old being the huge crowd that came to hear him. But it wasn't until Graham was sixteen at the preaching of another evangelist doctor Mordecai Hamm affected him differently than anything he'd heard before. He became deeply convicted about his sin fullness and rebellion against god eventually taking the step of committing his life to Jesus Christ. In his video biography God's ambassador Graham spoke of the impact of that event. I went up to my room not realizing what had happened really it didn't feel any different. And I remember nailing down as a full moon by night and I looked out across the woods in the field. And I said lord I don't know what's happened I don't know what this means but whatever means. I would appreciate your help. Afterwards by his own account all signs pointed to his thinking and direction in life having changed. With Billy Graham experiencing renewed interest in the word of god in the Bible. After high school there were brief stints at Bob Jones College in Cleveland Tennessee. Florida Bible institute outside Tampa and then in 1940. Billy Graham enrolled in Wheaton College outside Chicago where his future wife Ruth bell was a student. I was frightened to death that I ask of Fred date. When I've finally worked up enough courage to ask got to go at Christmas time of domicile of ever going to have him the chapel. I'm sought took it to the Marseille. And as she was everything that I've heard about are very beautiful and Hamburg Warman served from Miami so our romance began at that time. I'm in the coming back in the day and that pain that I've said motives here let me that that man out considered the greatest and the dimensional. Ruth the daughter of missionary parents grew up in China attended high school in North Korea and one of Billy Graham who by then was an ordained Baptist minister. To go with her as a missionary to Tibet. Billy did not feel called in that direction and told her so but it didn't keep them apart they were married in 1943. Had her parents' house and Montrae North Carolina. Grams introduction to traveling evangelism began with the youth for Christ in the Chicago area. Who's director wanted to organize youth rallies around the country modeled after his rallies that included sermons. Aimed at servicemen and women on weekend leave during World War II. Newly married with growing experience in the pulpit and ready to travel preacher and evangelize. Graham accepted the offer to spearhead the project. And thus grams worldwide travels began. Opportunities to preach were many especially in post war Europe and the pattern was set it was a life focused on evangelistic preaching. Delivering the gospel of Jesus Christ and it wasn't long after in 1949. The Graham first gained nationwide attention during his Los Angeles tense crusade. I do not believe it at night. That any man can all of the problem the lights went out to eat the right. One of grams early concerns about the style of preaching he employed at such events was the poor image that so called mass if Angeles and had in the eyes of many people. He knew that Sinclair lewis' fictional character Elmer Gantry and given traveling evangelist a bad name and the some real life evangelists were not much better. At the dedication of Graham library in Charlotte. Longtime associate cliff barrows said that in 1948 a barrels home in Modesto California. Billy cautioned that they should ask god to help guard them against some of the pitfalls that eventual space. So they compiled a list of guiding principles. One was integrity we ought to be men of integrity. The second principle is the man who were accountable. The third was men of moral purity. And the fourth was men with a humble heart and spirit. And I said we'll build those are wonderful let's remember them by calling at the Modesto manifesto. And we have. And we have by the grace of god endeavor to keep those. Principal so because of his principled approach and also because of grams forceful preaching style his crusades drew increasing amounts of media attention. In November of 1950 Graham took to the airwaves first first two regularly scheduled weekly broadcast. The power of decision which aired on WBT radio and it stations across the country for decades thereafter. In the early fifties Billy Graham took his gospel message on the road like never before. Crisscrossing the US with stops in nearly every major market before going international with three years of crusades in Europe through 1956. Longtime Charlotte broadcaster Charles Crutchfield spoke of those days in 1996 interviewed during grams Charlotte crusade. I called him a New Yorkers doing crusade and Madison square garden and I was listening to him on the radio. We had just started television and a good movie to the national. I'll call him unknown told them this have this bill that is crucially it would be wonderful. On television on the public school the United States and you thought it was a great do. Graham later wrote that the most important outcome of the first weeks of his 1957. New York City crusade. Was the decision to televise the Saturday night service lives at Crutchfield is urging for four weeks in June over the AB CTV network. Many people across the country saw Graham for the first time preaching during his New York crusade. Those appearances feature Graham and his trademark style appealing to individuals to look inside themselves you may be. How would they can deal with crime and culture. I church member in good standing in the community. I had not looked upon the heart they feed off art that desperately wicked I didn't Matthew 158 he's just check that out heartfelt are from god. Drawing from the Bible Graham exhorted viewers across the country and those New York appearances the same way he would later call upon listeners in countries around the world. To open their hearts to god. Wouldn't you like avenue Marlon make up that we didn't bring them Pollack replaced temptation and attempt up. Wouldn't you like that quite an item can forgive but I have. Keep trying I'm Q are you become and you play and hitting try. I've let him come in to my heart and I've come to the crawls he's forgiven my since I have eternal life. I know I'm safe tonight. Use told G 1110 WG. Remember marine reverend Billy Graham called what is a man profited additional gain the whole world. I lose his own soldiers used tall. I'm telling you BT. Or 1958. Meet Charlotte. Billy Graham center Christian is more than a person who is living up to a system of ethics. But Christian is more than a person living a good moral life. Christian is a person in whom Christ dwells. South Bend, Indiana. 1977. Looking for that blessed hope and glorious appearing of the great god and say yeah. How lord Jesus Christ you see there are two sides of this here today looking for his coming those that know not Christ I'm looking at is coming with clear. You're afraid. You're afraid of good judgment you're afraid you won't stand up you're afraid you're all strong. There's another crowd here today it's looking politic is coming with great jaw and anticipation. Because you're already you want him to come. They're tired of this whole world you're ready to go hole. Every morning when I get out. I thank the lord. Maybe maybe maybe it'll be today. They listen to this third chapter of second freedom. Knowing this first. That there shall come and the last day's golf clothes walking after their own lots. Scotland's people scoff. You BI did Christ is coming can't you certainly don't believe that. They're walking after their own less than a wanna be disturbed and all the good times that having an all the materialism and everything they're getting here. They don't wanna miss all those good TV programs and all the rest up and so they scoff at the idea that Christ is coming in the world's going to be judged. And they say is the promise of this coming why he's been promising to come but 2000 years and hasn't come. He's not going to come you Christians have a false hope. All of this they willingly ignorant you willingly ignorant. Bob the word of god thank heavens were woven lyrics standing out of the water and in the water. Grab by the world that band was being overflowed with water perished. God says because there was a plunge. You can count cash pool. Judgment is gonna come again. It came in nose then the people scoff and laugh. The judgment is coming in some did today we Scott Dunlap. But for those of us that no Christ. It's a blessed and glorious hope. All they agony of age you will come to an end. All the chairs will be wiped away I'm you have an and you are well emerge. And you. And I will be back when the lord Jesus Christ is crowned king of kings and lord of lords and the great band but in this guy that is called a married south of the lamb. When the church where about blemish. Every ball again but leave off a member of the body of Christ there's going to be chill wind as the bride and bridegroom. My seat has been reserves. It was ball fall and not good silver and gold but with the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Did you seek reserve. Would you be that. Going to be a time a personal redemption social betterment. The kingdom is to be set up. The defeat of every enemy since moving defeated death will be defeated cal will be dictated the devil will be this. Joy will be thrown into the lake of fire. One at a time that's going to be and won a world it's going to be. You say we'll bella that's some sort of escape mechanism that the Bible's got all worked out. No it's not it's no dream a pie in the sky buying back its no smokescreen about apathy no pretext for an ambulance. Not all of the second coming as a powerful incentive to sack this. It's the most powerful incentive for my own preaching that I've ever known it. There are many reasons why preach the gospel one is the calls got called me to do it. They gave me on us to do it that's enough right back. But Paul said you go beyond that knowing that tire of the law and I think to persuade men and the love of Christ on the cross causes me to do it. But they're glorious hope with the coming of Christ. There's a problem incentive to send us around the world because when that last solo saved. When the gospel of the kingdom has preached every creature. Then shall the end come said the lord Jesus Christ somehow he wrapped it all up when you mentioned listen. Military am. Or edit the agent 99 well into his 99 year in fact. And you must see Billy Graham skinny dipping. There's a story out today that he reportedly did go skinny dipping at least once with Lyndon Johnson when he was president of the white tells the story goes that. Shortly after LBJ was sworn into office he invited Billy Graham on over and neither had a bathing suit. And now you know more rest. The story. Preacher man shall not live by bread alone but by everywhere that proceeded out of the mouth. Who's talking 1110 WDT term. Arm many feel or remember Bobby Inman from a WB TV longtime anchor there are 31 era career and no journalism he'd go left of history just a few seconds ago and thought to myself there's no way he left in June of 1996. To I'd devote full time to creative writing worries have been unbelievably successful as a novelist and a screenwriter and they'll playwright. Sold gosh Bob if you've been gone for a 22 years now you must be really old. Up at all anxious yeah I mean older brother today thank that I am not 22 years older than there's no bad that now let's it is it's amazing to 22 years early. Yeah it is and you know it's it's still surprising to me job that that every once in awhile till I was somebody will hear my voice and turn and so they are Q Bob and and I did I did after all this time people would remember that I think that's amazing. It's the ultimate compliment. We we had done the late Jack Gayle who just passed away recently on and and and people certainly remembered him and Murphy in the morning no talks about. You know I did the letters that he still gets from Charlotte in Chicago from VOA it's amazing made they'd they'd do they remember their media people enough. And especially back in that because that was kind of the glory days of a media. There's say a picture float around a bit about you today standing there with a microphone in the Reverend Billy Grail mom not exactly sure where you are but. You can't have had his long career as you do it enough in Charlotte and not have been rove brushed by Billy Graham in some way or shape or another. Absolutely that photograph was taken in Berlin that column and the crew from the station that I wept to cover all booed when the Berlin Wall was beginning to come bell. And that doctor Graham wanted to preach at the wall. And so. We we took a crew went and win and covered his speech. And have a number of occasions to chat with your help our it was the first time actually go higher. What except for one other one other time that the only time my head and the quality Lincoln's time with his. Com but that's that's where there wasn't what you Wear that wasn't related. And it ended talked to give me about Debian behind the scenes without a microphone on a nine and just being able to talk to him. Yeah are absolutely and he was so kind and generous. Wouldn't us give us tie him you know we anytime we wanted to ask you a question. He was he was available to do it and I came away without them portion of the human being that was just so far I mean it was a fuel the fire may have regardless of what they'll ever he did in his life and all the people letting touched he was a genuinely good human beings so. We talked today because I had read a little bit earlier that he had probably evangelize to about 212 million people in news sixty years out on the road and I had it occurred to me today. And a lot more than that through media. Radio and television in the like. But it occurred to me today that with his passing. He's probably a reaching a larger audience today that he may have been many a full sixty years of what you evangelize this will be a worldwide story all we have played a number of pieces of film. Evangelizing over the area over the years. I I'd I don't know what the numbers will be but there will be people that will find Jesus Christ today because of what they hear on media today. Absolutely well you know the more he can the end is in life or death the more he can get his message out the more it will will touch people and it's such people deeply. In those states but John what what I think I'm sure someone else has mentioned this this morning but the first time. Billy Graham was put on television. Would divide WB TV in Charlotte. I didn't know that I did know the connection between WBT radio and and Charlie Crutchfield and and and then the beginning of his broadcasting but about tell me about that you do you know the story behind the BTV. Well guess that I and I heard that controlled Crutchfield. When I interviewed him at length. Well after he had on both had retired from. Offer a bird displeasure that the company called and he told me that that's somebody came in and said this this young. How bright young evangelist was going to be all preaching after the old auditorium downtown courtroom of the nine Muppet all but that's that he went and hurting one night and been. And then imported mall and that was that was the beginning of birth of the broadcasting. As part of Billy Graham's career and and vote the way too much of anything. We I talked to Lleyton Ford his brother in law about an hour ago. And his voice sounds just as strong has I don't I want his voice. Not eat your voice still sounds pretty darn good to you're you're you're ready to come back. Up the dog to barely be good if they're not that I've decided that that writing is what I wanna do when I grow up. Not oh effort and didn't grow up but what I'm up to Bob Olson in writing projects now and am not trying to stay go on vertical and emotion I. We talked about this 22 years ago when you left because I had you know before you by accident doe one Julian price place and we talked about the state of broadcasting in. I'm where it was going and if I believe I told you a story about a guy by the name of Bob Palmer who I've always kind of a associated with you he was a longtime Denver road anchor. And and I heard an interview with him on KOA Radio One day as he was leaving broadcasting and he said he got a little frustrated with what the broadcasting industry had become and he said. I've always wondered how loved broadcasting industry would handle different. Mitt moments in history and he said I think in order in terms of television and what has become today a Moses came off the mountain today we'd say. Moses came off the mound today with the ten commandments from god will be back in the second with three of them up up up up. And I thought that was the greatest analogy room. Yeah award for a time pro am now that your your your news director would never allow that. What it would get there without being I know you're not the type that would be super critical of anything but or when when you look at media today and how. It seems to a broken into our camps of left and right and sold and so forth you just shake your head and wonder where journalism went. Yeah well I do John. You know in in my day you in the Arab unrest started off at the little weekly newspaper in my hometown and Alabama off. I'll do disc jockey and our way through college. And then got in the television news and then that's some more writing later on a for the observer and I'll and it's been you know what it's so it's subtle breeze there. All and it is an FA I think media is all the last all of them and I don't care which side of the political spectrum you're on. But when I had when I. Julianne to broadcast. I wanna know just like old jars sergeant Friday on dragnet. Just the fact. Ma'am what is seems like we've broken into. You know conservative radio who. Global radio wouldn't nothing much in between. And I guess that's just a reflection of the country we're very polarized an American I am and don't seem to be able to find any models are. We are we are played out clip from Billy Graham and he was talking about. Video noah's time and and the flood didn't and now people that believe that we will meet a catastrophe at some point again and I don't know that I buy into that all completely but. Boy there's an awful lot of people love that look at the world today and look where we're going to look at the ethics in the morals and school shootings has been obviously something we've talked about hero a lot in the last 45 days and and then what is it about somebody that could. I take lives like that and and and to some extent it's a moral decay of society enough. Are you know it to some extent a fighter and been able to talk to Billy Graham today I don't want to I guess and ask him how how how close do you think we are two god stood put his foot down again because it just seems like go. Were hidden in the wrong direction and and maybe that's just. Maybe that's just like what happened with the Roman empire on May be great societies are doomed to failure eventually because you can't take all of that. Opulence and and none and handle it. I did I mention doctor Graham and his later years was just may ease. At the lack of civil discourse. Which you know what I would think to think of about them that back a few minutes ago about doctor Graham and I'm talking to you. The one thing I remember. A lot is that he was apolitical. He was friends who took every president. Friend and advisor to every president during his story is so adult like tad bit he came in contact with the matter but were independent Democrat Republicans. He was it was a layer to be up off our spiritual advisor and be a forehand that. He played golf with them and and there was just absolutely nothing political. That I ever heard about about Billy Gloria and yes and and that's that's part of his legacy that they could do a reverse Serb member. I read at things today obviously had met with every president of the US president since 1950 he didn't meet with trumpets president but he had done met with trumpet the grove park in a number of years ago. Com that he was a registered dead Democrat despite his conservative views he may have been the last conservative Democrats. Half on the record I don't know if that's true or not. And I don't think you can I don't think you can pigeon hole him politically. I think as such there I think it was eight political. All of you without you was he was a strict constructionist. Of the Bible. And if you consider that conservative than he was. But it didn't have this thing to do with the politics and remembered that Billy Graham registered to vote when he was 21 years old. And the states that where you couldn't get elected on Russia were a Democrat so everybody it was a Democrat and other adults accused. His to a political affiliations. Are really getting burned to do. On at least in the old days you pretty much registered I got to register when I was eighteen that was the first year that they allowed to eighteen year olds to vote but you you kind of registered the way did your own parents were registered at the time that's what you thought you were no an Intel up life taught you differently or not that's that's what you stated. Exactly I think parents you know were were but deciding factor Arnold how a lot of people follow register them and may still think. But its own. Well yeah we're you know we're we're pretty polarized and I think doctor Graham with. Oh we're sorry we need to put our our politics behind us and and Europe the message that he delivered. Over and over the such great effect. Rich man shall not live by bread alone but my everywhere that proceeded out of them out. You who's talking 1110 WET. When he prays with you. In the Oval Office saw the upstairs the White House. Do you feel laced praying for you not to address the lack testimony today is that I'm just one. Top tens of millions of people whose spiritual life. This had been shaped it I've been aground in nineteen spent with us. At the White House. There's desert storm was being lunch stands out above the others. Like any president. So I felt this decision due to commit American troops into harm's way. Which is a decision incidentally that only a president can make it was also the hardest decision. That I had to make when I was president. And to be sure never even for a second doubt the moral clarity. Our mission that January night in 1991. But as someone who had lived through war. They had seen death up close. I was naturally concerned the life of every man and woman wearing our uniform. And just as president Lincoln has observed. I found myself driven to my knees in prayer and here's what he said by the conviction. Did I had nowhere else to turn and so we're gathered here today because Billy Graham. The man. The preacher. The humble farmer's son who helped change the world is a spiritual gift to all of us. And. The kinda run there. Have cheese sauce. Times news. Logo are. Okay. Yeah I grew. There. And. Are you talking. It's. And OK the game. I grew. Early news. Rely excuse me ma'am here's. Dude we. I. I. Moved. With how great our our thou art and iron and thought oh my grandfather. Because if you ever heard that song played. It brought tears to his office. And that got me to thinking oh what was Billy Graham's. Favorite film. And so like Google that and I ended up I think on the Billy Graham. Library web site. And it said Billy Graham has been asked this question often and he has a number of hymns that he is particularly fond of in 1992. During an interview with Diane Sawyer Billy Graham spoke about his. Harsh reality to what are friend we have in Jesus. Which also happened to be president Eisenhower's favored him. Any also recounted his memories of George Beverly Shea singing. Our complete. When we're in Christ. And another song from George Beverly Shea. On Billy Graham short list. I'd rather have Jesus. And just design am of course was one of the special songs as well. Well that same article basically what was Billy Graham's favorite Bible verse. And it was in essence the simplest of all of them. And as he said 25 words. But it is dog gospel in a nutshell. My favorite verse of scripture was taught to me by my mother when I was just a little boy said Billy Graham. For god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son. That whosoever believe that in him. Should not perish. But have everlasting life. John 316. It's not just a sports metaphor. It really is the foundation of what Billy Graham dedicated his entire life to. There are. A couple of things that I've run across that are just beautifully written. One of them is in USA today where Billy Graham's. Son Franklin. To the best of my knowledge. This is the first time that he has publicly talked about the death of his father. They start the article off by saying my father neighbor never gave up on me even when I caused him pain. He lives like the gospel he preached a message he repeated Hillis last breath. Then the article says my father has joined my mother in heaven he went to sleep in his home in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina and he woke up in the arms of Jesus. And while many around the world mourn his physical death. He is now celebrating the internal the eternal life that he spent over seventy years telling millions of people about. He talks about 2005. And a Gallup poll the relieved their revealed that one in six American adults. 35 million people. Had heard Billy Graham preach in person. He says since 1947. Some 215. Million people. It more than 400 crusades rival cast an evangelistic rallies heard my father tell them. The Bible says. For god so loved the world that he gave his only begun that they gave his only son. That whosoever believes in him will not perish but heavy turtle life. And today he is experiencing. What he devoted his lifetime. To telling others that they could experience. If they placed their trust. In Jesus Christ. Billy Graham. Charlotte's favorite son. Dead at the age of 99. Continuing eighteen cup Richmond. I'll try to fill that empty void in your life. Yeah. Really grab nothing else satisfied. Who's talking 1110 WPG. Has age and the illness of his wife Ruth kept Billy Graham home in Montrae North Carolina for the most part. His evangelistic association never slowed. In mid 2007 after its offices have relocated from Minneapolis to his old hometown of Charlotte. Billy Graham came to town prior to a dedication ceremony of his new library speaking at a private event on site. The powerful voice that once commanded the attention of hundreds of thousands had softened but the heart of the men was the same as he spoke to those gathered. Only regret that my wife Carrie Lee here. She is soon envelopes for about six months now. A total truth too broad for a couple minutes. This is super low regard greetings. Corporation could be here in just a very. How we're going to see her. And she's fully agree. Full. Being here. She's followed or have been here this is such investment pool alarms go home. Are doing to sort of serve four times a good. We're perfect over every month. Consumers are great part of this. Ministry that we've been involved doing. On the day of the library dedication his son Franklin Graham said the purpose of the library was not to glorify his father. The concern that. My father had that I had as well as the board of directors at this not be a monument to Billy Graham. Because of this is going to be a monument to Billy Graham my father wanted nothing to do with it. Matter fact when he goes to the libraries is that too much Billy Graham minute I think if his name was mentioned one time he was say there's too much Billy Graham. This library is not about Billy Graham let us about the message that Billy Graham has preached for the last. Sixty plus years among those in attendance at the library dedication on Billy Graham parkway three former presidents Jimmy Carter's cited the reverend Graham's ability to break down seemingly insurmountable barriers including the iron curtain. He went to hungry. In 1977. And me preach to the CIA told me hundreds of thousands of people who came forward to hear his message. The Hungarian. Government set. Maybe a thousand showed up. And then landed yet another thing that was. Profoundly significant. He met with Pope John Paul the second. And both of these things book criticized by many. Devout Christians. As going to the Communist and going to the Catholics. But that was the kind of thing that Billy Graham did. Also speaking at the library dedication to Bill Clinton spoke of a private act by Billy Graham during a visit to Arkansas in 1989. When he. Preached a crusade in little rock band. My pastor whom he had known was dying of cancer and only had a couple of months to live. When all he had to do Billy Graham let me take him to my pastor's home. And then weighed. Less than money pounds. Do not listen to them talk about life. Then you have to life. It was a conversation. That was silently until they. He didn't have to do that. No one would have known that he had not a single soul. What it's all a bit less than. He did it because of who he is. And eloquent introduction was also provided at the 2007 library dedication by former president George H. W. Bush a long time friend of Billy Graham. We gathered to celebrate the life and the accomplishments but the man who I do believe is America's pastor. Men who have been a constant. Gradient of light. The light of truth in a world often cloaked in darkness. And shrouded and deceit. The mayor also briefing note. It is also had a profound impact. I know we had on your family and he certainly has had a profound impact on my family in a very personal way. They're nothing self conscious however about my relationship but Jesus Christ. And thanks to Billy have come to understand this all important relationship in deeper and more meaningful way it's. I've been privileged to witness. And see that Christ like way that he invites persons of every faith. Can come together in prayer and so we're gathered here today because Billy Graham. The man. The preacher. The humble farmer's son who helped change the world is a spiritual gift to all of us. Then finally it was doctor grams turn to speak get wiped at age 87 many supposed. Might be his last public appearance. I feel like I've been spending Mon general. Goal of these speeches. Move oil move and from our new term group small and humbled by at all. A mere two weeks after that happy events grams beloved wife Ruth passed away in early June of 2007 at the couple's home in Mon three. When her husband and five children at her bedside just four days after her 87 Thursday. Graham spoke briefly at a memorial service the day before her burial. I would prefer to call you for sharing resurfaced today. I wish I could. Stay and visit never rude but I won't be able Cooper coast we're going to Charlotte. Her tomorrow she will be very. A lot of burned. The day before she died Graham announced that he and Ruth had decided to be buried beside each other on the library grounds. Billy Graham's life beyond preaching his life beyond Ruth was never empty his mind remained clear as he entered his mind he's. Even as he struggled with occasional health issues but he sensed through the the aging process provide an opportunities for sharing biblical wisdom and encouragement. Years earlier at one of his crusade Gramm had offered this perspective on death. The Bible tells us it's the last. And it. I'm looking forward to it I really am. My wife said please don't say that anymore. And I am I'll be happy when the day comes when the lord says come home. I've got something broader plan. A prolific writer over the years Graham published a book in 2011 that he called nearing home about life faith and finishing well. In that he posed the question is old age only a cruel burden that grows heavier and heavier as the years go by with nothing to look forward to the death. Or can it be something more. His focus was on aging gracefully not retiring from life and influencing the impressionable. From the perspective of one who lived a full life filled with joys and sorrows Billy Graham asked his older readers. If by their attitudes they made younger people dread growing old. Old age wrote Billy Graham does not exempt us from fulfilling our purposes in life. And of course he pointed to multiple examples from the Bible of men and women who made a profound impact on generations that followed. Although Billy Graham is final earthly resting places to be next to his wife of nearly 65 years at their library in Charlotte. It is fitting to remember what motivated him throughout his life by words that he spoke at the dedication of that library. It's silly. Do the home news. Just a building. That's an instrument. It's a smooth over gospel. The pro America or use the gospel of Christ. And it is for that that the reverend Billy Graham we'll forever be remembered. I'm Jim barrel WBT news continuing team coach rich without. Twice to fill that ended void in your life and grew to Winfrey and Billy Graham nothing else satisfy some good news talked to eleven. And on no FaceBook today I ran across and Graham lots statement on her dad and I won't read all of it to you because it's a somewhat lengthy but it's a beautiful. She writes my father's legacy as one that encompasses the world and in golf's my own life and when I think of him I don't. Think of Billy Graham the public figure I think in my daddy's. The one who was always a farmer Hart. Who loved his dogs in his cap. Who followed the weather patterns almost as closely as he did world events. Who wore old blue jeans comparable sweaters and baseball cap he loved lukewarm coffee. Sweet iced tea. One scoop of ice cream and a plain hamburger from McDonald's. Who was registered and everything and everyone from the small to the great whose mind remembered details that even a computer would have trouble recalling. Later in her. Jesus completed that sentence by saying that no one comes to the father but by me. Based on what Jesus said. Daddy is safely with the father. In heaven. Daddy well all Leo acclaim not only claim Jesus is the only way to god. He lived by the truth publicly on platforms and privately behind closed doors and is now enjoying the real life. She says that while he may be physically absent in his voice silent I am confident that his message will continue to reverberate throughout the generations to come. My prayer on this day. Of his move into our father's house is that his death will be a rallying cry that tens of thousands of pastors and teachers and evangelists and ordinary men and women will rise to take his place. And she says and so. Which concludes. And so even as my tears seemed to be unending. I silently rededicate my life to picking up and passing on the baton. Would you do the same. That's just part of what she. Road and I'm sure you'll have reason to be exposed to it in one way or the other. Until sometime or another but. That's a beautiful day to take your Christian and you believe in what Billy Graham believed. What he works for all of his life he achieved today. Sad for those who are left behind. But so glorious for Billy Graham to finally. Reach his life's goal. I believe that. I have friends who don't. I feel safer on myself. We'll come back and I share that started that day interview with Lleyton Ford his or drive them doctor Graham's brother in law. The husband of his only surviving sister Gina after the 530 news. You yeah you gotta be a great voice and your own right. Saw that that booming you sound like George Beverly shade of me. Well that's a great compliment. On first of all how is everybody family red enough FaceBook. Well we haven't thought that everybody at my my wanted to attack do it easier this morning us belittled daughter should just sort of let loose I'm going to talk through. Barney had a pregnant wife that I would. And and anybody that logo was the son of an episcopal priest to know when my dad died I can remember telling people that would come up and say oh I'm so sorry I would say oh my gosh it's a great day it's. If you believed in what he believed in you just have to be you have to be happy for him and I think one of the greatest gift that anybody even. A world renowned evangelist can lead back to their family is no doubt. As to where they are. You know. Years ago Billy spoke at. One of the big piece many turn Charlie got a special or mean come on out new blue suit he's kind of smiled at America. Some try to implement an and so it is where that might provide diploma farewell or not. It's all the wonderful story about the famous Einstein and who was on a train a lot this ticket and connectors that don't don't worry don't worry and he says yeah but I don't norm go. And then Billy says. You know where you're going I don't know where I'm going. So that's that's where he's gone. I have played in job that I have done of they did abilities closeup of my trade open gate. And I saw that want the data together so that's those symbolic the lord is that gate he's just. A Big Brother Ahmad romantic Charlotte now I wish I could take you with me. And then Obama's announcement villain two words he spoke at stake he says all by. But now there are there will be brought him back here to Charlotte of course this Berkeley itself. And what do you what you've I read that in no your peace with Tim called bunker earlier today to. What do you think the Oman amount. I think you were asked how much satellite go. Because it does this was still home this was still the far wall distillery and he wore blue Jones. Always always hope that's right bad. Farm out there ready to play out I'm not. I'm part broad and that was that was still homely bluntly don't become nearly. As in this city vital it like to have lived here all would love to come home to Charlotte that it provided Obi you're caught actually root. A red. A little bit today where he was at some point of his life was kind of cushion it questioning. In his own mind the literal. Interpretation. Of the Bible and he had gone up someplace and had put the Bible on a stone. And was. The questioning whether or not he was gonna believe it or whether or not he was not going to believe it. Did he ever talk about that. Community if he has genuine hero he's written about that a lot rocker. That that happened and a member is that I've got to take all of this like you have by Trace of little parts that I don't understand. Billy was never on over electoral estimates cents a you have to believe. This one particular way you know you have to interpret scripture but he took it as God's word and departed and understand. You can't wait has got about those some good. He talked they did they did speak with authority because a woman the Bible says a lot of ideas or what you believe god its says. I meant little bit earlier that I I grew up on a different part of the country and McEnroe Lockett past the TV screen and seeing him it though one of his so crusades but I never paid a whole lot of attention and I and I suppose in part because. I was already going to church every Sunday my folks got me up may be where those itchy gray slacks every Sunday well Laura wanted to or not. But I all very thankful that it did that my career landed me in no Charlotte because now I understand more about the Billy Graham's tonight and I certainly understand more about why and what he means to. To this community but I believe it was the 9/11. Talk speech that he gave where he talked about people that are mad at god are questioning their faith. Some we all go through that oh whether or not we feel guilty about it or not at any given point but that it's okay to do that is it not.
